New Beginnings: An American Story of Romantics and Modernists

From the era of the late Romantics to the advent of early Modernism this exhibition will include more than 100 early 20th century artworks by 70 artists, including signature works by well-known as well as under-recognized artists.

Includes work by artists such as Ernest L. Blumenschein, E. Irving Couse, Stuart Davis, Leon Gaspard, Robert Henri, John Marin, John Sloan, and Walter Ufer are juxtaposed with lesser known or virtually unknown works by William Verplanck Birney, Richard Crisler, Katherine Levin Farrell, Jan Matulka, Arthur Musgrave, Polia Pillin, and Beulah Stevenson.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Santa Fe and Taos were recognized as two of the nation’s – and world’s – most important art communities. The cosmopolitan denizens of these relatively remote outposts embraced a multicultural America by engaging with Native American and Hispano populations.

By placing the works of lesser-known artists alongside pillars of the art community, New Beginnings offers a fresh perspective and new dimension to the history of the Taos and Santa Fe art colonies and their enduring legacy.

This traveling exhibition is comprised of works on loan from Tia Collection, accompanied by a lavishly illustrated catalogue presenting 111 objects by 72 artists from the Tia Collection, including paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures.
