Founded in 1984, the museum collects American art with an emphasis on progressive contemporary art from the northern Rocky Mountain and northern Plains regions.
The Montana Collection is core to the museum's holdings, and includes nearly 2,000 works of art inspired by today's West. Also included are more than sixty woodblock prints, a collection of New York Abstract Expressionist art, and works by regional illustrator Will James.
