A Gathering: Sculpture

From the Collection

Exhibition Website

Nov 21 2018 - Feb 27 2019

A Gathering: Sculpture from the Collection includes 19 objects spanning a period of fifty-five years (1947-2002), and highlighting the versatility of materials worked by different hands. The artists in the exhibition employ steel, aluminum, wood, and found objects to explore movement, sound, origin, transformation, minimalist form, and the specificity of three-dimensional objects in space.

According to artist John Chamberlain, “Every material has a different density, different weight… Every hand squeezes differently. In finding your place in sculpture, you need to find the material that offers you just the right resistance. As it turns out, car metal offers me the correct resistance so that I can make a form – not overform it or underform it.” The exhibition includes sculpture that ranges from the figurative to the abstract and from the playful to the profound.

Artists included in the exhibition are François Baschet, Harry Bertoia, Chakaia Booker, Alexander Calder, John Chamberlain, Melvin Edwards, Robert Goodnough, Robert Helsmoortel, Donald Judd, Barbara Korman, Heinz Mack, George Rickey, Arthur Simms, Kenneth Snelson, Günther Uecker, Ursula von Rydingsvard.
