Over the last few decades, there has been a trend to take craft materials beyond a functional format to artistic expression. Clay has always been a traditional medium for both everyday objects and sculpture. For the Hockaday’s exhibition, Beyond Craft: The Art of Ceramics, participating artists will submit work that has artistic meaning, from whimsical to playful to thoughtful social commentary. Artists will display one wall piece and one pedestal piece with a brief statement of the meaning behind their work. The Hockaday has invited 25 ceramic artists to participate in this special exhibition.
Our state is blessed with many talented ceramic artists, and all the artists in this exhibit are Montana residents. Many are also members of the Montana Clay Society and have been involved with the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana, an organization that brings in artists from all over the world for residency programs and classes in all branches of ceramic arts.
