Previously known as The Research Studio, A&H’s Maitland Art Center was home to a number of significant artists from 1938-1956. These artists were known as Bok Fellows, in homage to The Research Studio benefiting from the generous support of philanthropist Mary Curtis Bok. In 2013, the Art & History Museums – Maitland implemented its new Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program with the arrival of artist Josette Urso. To this day, the program thrives with visiting artists residing in founder André Smith’s home and studio throughout the year. We honor this legacy with our Women of the Research Studio exhibit, featuring works from female Bok Fellows; 2017 AiR Nikki Painter, a mixed media artist captivated by creating visions of a new world through her artmaking; and 2017 AiR Elisabeth Condon, who explored the iconography of Maitland Art Center’s founder André Smith through a contemporary lens.
