Oct 3 2017 - Jan 7 2018

This exhibition features the stories of African Americans living and working in South Carolina during the 1920s and 30s told through the eyes of one of the state’s most revered photographers Richard Samuel Roberts. Based out of his downtown photography studio, Roberts took thousands of photographs documenting the lives of individuals and families from Columbia’s African-American commercial district. Today, these photographs are part of the CMA Collection and are actively used to teach about their historical significance and Roberts’ artistic legacy.
