Both woodcut and woodblock prints have been popular methods of printing for centuries. The history of woodblock prints dates back to ancient Han Dynasty China and European artists have been creating woodcuts since the fifteenth century. Both mediums lend themselves to a dizzying amount of variety, from the minutely detailed Old Master prints of Albrecht Durer to brilliantly-colored abstract works of contemporary artists.
Carved demonstrates the great diversity in woodcut and woodblock printing and pays homage to the long tradition of the medium, drawing from the Museum’s extensive collection of works on paper.
