The 20th Century Wars & Their Impact on Southern Illinois

2016 marks some dramatic anniversaries: the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor during World War II, the 99th anniversary of the U.S. entry into WWI, and the 80th anniversary of the beginning of Spanish Civil War. Millions lost their lives in these conflicts and whether on the battlefield or on the home front, these wars impacted people world wide and in Southern Illinois.

The 20th Century changed everything: from hemlines to constitutional amendments, from ration books to new countries, from trench warfare to nuclear power, from penicillin to space exploration.
