Once upon a time, much of a day’s labor was performed by hand. Requiring a great deal of skill, patience, and solitude, quality handiwork is still required in some professions today. The dignity and grace of labor done by hand is celebrated in A Work in Process, an exhibition of paintings by New Orleans-born artist Gustave Blache. His intimate views of mop makers, curtain cleaners, cooks, and even fine art conservators engaged in their work recall the seamstresses and laundresses depicted by Degas and Renoir.
