The mission of HMAAC is to collect, conserve, explore, interpret, and exhibit the material and intellectual culture of Africans and African Americans in Houston, the state of Texas, the southwest and the African Diaspora for current and future generations.

In addition to other exhibition space, the Bert Long Jr. Gallery allows the museum to annually exhibit the work of four artists working in the greater Houston area. Until his death in 2013, Bert Long, Jr. was one of the brightest lights in the Houston arts community. In recognition of his support of local artists, HMAAC established this gallery in Bert’s name.
