Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, the museum is set on four acres of prairie-style gardens in a riverside location.

With a core collection focused on "Great Art Inspired by Water."  In addition to traditional marine or maritime art, the museum is also home to a major collection on long-term loan of works from the Hudson River School and Luminism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, Realism, Modernism, and contemporary art. 

Included are works by Turner, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Cassatt, Gauguin, Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, O'Keeffe, Homer, Wyeth, and many more.

The MMAM exhibits 10 or more historical and contemporary exhibitions each year.
