An art collecting and teaching institution, the museum is part of the University of Minnesota, Duluth.  

The permanent collection of more than 9,000 works represents a range of cultures and periods of art history. The initial collection of 19th and early 20th century European and American painting has expanded to include contemporary Native American works, contemporary art, works on paper, and ceramics.
