Opened in 1970, the museum houses more than 7,000 objects in its collection, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, textiles, and ceramics.
In addition to exhibits drawn from the permanent collection, the museum hosts changing exhibitions of contemporary and traditional works of art.
The museum is associated with South Dakota State University.
