Textiles have often provided a source of inspiration for artists. Whether incorporating fabric or employing processes such as embroidery, the artists featured in this rotation of Re/Framed borrow from craft and textile traditions. By weaving photographs, stitching together diverse visual sources, or pressing textiles onto the printing plate, these artists worked across mediums to evoke ideas about family, culture, history, and ancestral knowledge through the use of textiles.

This iteration of Re/Framed spotlights work by artists such as Anila Agha, Sandra C. Fernández, Laura Gilpin, Helen M. Post, and Sarah Sense that feature fabric, thread, and embroidery as medium or subject.

Re/Framed gives visitors to the Carter a new way to look at the Museum’s collection. Several times a year, artwork is rotated throughout the galleries allowing visitors to see the works through a different lens. Works that are part of Re/Framed can be identified by the window icon on their labels.
