Education & Empowerment: Scholarship Recipients

In 1922, the Barnes Foundation was chartered with concepts of democracy, experimentation, and education at its core. One way Dr. Barnes pursued those ideals was through scholarships granted to a diverse group of students with interests spanning art, music, medicine, and more. 

This exhibition, a continuation of the 2023–24 edition, draws on archival materials to highlight the experiences of four more individuals whose education was supported by the Barnes in the first half of the 20th century: Kenneth Goodman, renowned organist; Lillian G. Hall, vocalist and music educator; Claude Clark, artist and educator; and Gwendolyn Bennett, an artist and poet active in the Harlem Renaissance.
