Piñatas: A Mexican Art of Paper and Paste

The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) presents Piñatas: A Mexican Art of Paper and Paste, a traveling exhibition exploring the rich history and cultural significance of one of Mexico’s most recognized folk art traditions. This exhibition highlights the pinata’s of traditional Albuquerque-based pinata maker Francisco Rodriguez.​​

Known in Mexico as cartonería, the art of paper and paste is woven into the fabric of Mexican cultural life. Cartoneros, the skilled artisans who practice this tradition, bring intricate paper objects to life using a variety of techniques and recipes passed down through generations. Of all cartonería’s many expressions, piñatas are the most widely recognized outside of Mexico.

This exhibition is organized by MOIFA in partnership with the New Mexico Rural Services Program of the New Mexico State Library and is offered at no cost to host venues which are rural libraries across the state.
