Kincentric Ecologies

Kincentric Ecologies investigates how contemporary Indigenous artists respond to their regional environmental issues, honoring the enduring bond between land and culture. This exhibition speaks to, and explores, the concept of kincentricity, an Indigenous worldview that is rooted in a deep appreciation for balance and harmony among all living things. Inspiring the artists in Kincentric Ecologies is a relationship to the environment that reflects the interconnectedness of people, plants, animals, spirits, and land. This drive prompts the question: how do contemporary Indigenous artists practice kincentric ecologies in an increasingly fraught environmental context? Here, artistic practice becomes a material expression of place, history, and ecological change.​​

This exhibition includes artists who work across a range of media and approaches and incorporates new commissions at each touring venue. At TMA an artwork by Harrison Preston (Wa:K O’odham) will be added.

Kincentric Ecologies features work by artists such as Leah Mata Fragua (Northern Chumash), Porfirio Gutiérrez (Zapotec), Ian Kuali’i (Kanaka Maoli/Mescalero Apache descent), Lehuauakea (Kanaka Maoli), Dakota Mace (Diné), Michael Namingha (Ohkay Owingeh-Hopi), Mikayla Patton (Oglala Lakota), Margarita Paz Pedro (Laguna Pueblo/Santa Clara Pueblo/Mexican descent).
