Gene Kloss: Where Land Meets Sky

Upon her first glimpse of Taos, New Mexico, Alice Geneva “Gene” Kloss (b. 1903 – d.1996) fell in love with the Southwest. Traveling with her etching press, she was inspired to generate work from what she encountered, including people, everyday life, and the surrounding landscape. Born in Oakland, California, Kloss shifted her focus to producing images of Taos in various forms, including prints, paintings, and sketches. Among her favorite subjects were vistas of the surrounding mountains and bustling scenes of Taos residents at work and play.

​​A prominent member of the Taos Art Colony and a masterful printer, Kloss yielded a body of work that over her lifetime is estimated at over 600 plates and 18,000 print editions. She personally pulled every print, following both traditional and experimental printing techniques. Gene Kloss: Where Land Meets Sky features prints and paintings by Kloss, highlighting the breadth of her career and interests in the Southwest, as well as her significant achievements as a woman artist in 20th-century American art.
