Exhibition Website

Mar 11 2023 - Dec 31 2023

How does hope drive us to imagine new worlds? Through 54 short videos, spanning more than six hours in length, artists from across Asia explore the role of hope in contemporary art and activism. Organized by the Asian Art Museum, this immersive experience in PEM’s Jeffrey P. Beale Gallery illustrates how hope is a feeling, a wish and a privilege — something all of us are seeking, while also highlighting how hope is essential for survival and change.

Explore the idea of hope and its expressions, both fulfilled and unfulfilled, through the lenses and many perspectives of peoples across Asia, including those from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Turkey and other underrepresented regions.

Accompanying the visual projection are drawings, photos, booklets and posters from international artists that provide additional context. Please note: Some material on view contains sensitive content. Viewer discretion advised.

After Hope: Videos of Resistance is organized by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
