Exhibition Website

Sep 1 2022 - Apr 23 2023

Interested in the intricacies of the physical body, Phoenix-based artist Monica Aissa Martinez uses line, shape, space, and color to represent the complex connections between body, mind, and spirit. She is drawn to the language of myth and symbol, feminine and masculine, emotion and logic, circle and line, horizontal (heavens and spirit) and vertical (earth and body), finding beauty in the systems and organization of living things.

Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Martinez earned a Master of Fine Arts from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at El Paso. She has exhibited her work at Crystal Bridges Museum, Arizona State University Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Tucson Museum of Art, Tempe Center for the Arts, Mesa Arts Center, and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Her works are in numerous public and private art collections throughout the Southwest. Martinez is currently an adjunct professor of art at Phoenix College.
