Signs and Symbols: Christian Iconography in Old Master Prints

Exhibition Website

Mar 23 2019 - May 12 2019

The study of Christian iconography is based in Biblical imagery and themes as they have historically appeared and reappeared in art over the ages. It focuses on the origins of these themes or depictions, explores their connections to biblical texts or to liturgy, and the relationship of religious events or individuals to imagery associated with them.

This exhibition of prints from the Museum’s permanent collection will examine how objects or images were used symbolically to signify information about an event or person in a religious context. Prints by some of history’s earliest European printmakers, including Albrecht Dürer, Martin Schongauer, and Heinrich Aldegrever will be featured.
