Lauren Greenfield: Girl Culture

Exhibition Website

Oct 26 2018 - Feb 24 2019

Lauren Greenfield’s photographic project Girl Culture, created between 1995 and 2000, is an insightful look at the ways American popular culture has fueled an obsession with appearances among women and girls across the United States. Girl Culture was published as a book in 2002 containing 100 photographs and 20 interviews with subjects.

This installation of selected images from Girl Culture is presented in conversation with Becoming a Woman in the Age of Enlightenment: French Art from the Horvitz Collection and The Many Faces of Womanhood in East Asia. Although centuries and cultures apart, these exhibitions address how perceptions of societal norms can affect the ways that girls and women regard themselves, their bodies, their roles, and their worth.
