Special Loans from the David C. Driskell Center

The Mount Holyoke College Art Museum is honored to host nine works by 19th and 20th-century African American artists for a special two-year loan from the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, College Park. On view as part of the exhibition Major Themes: Celebrating Ten Years of Teaching with Art, as well as in two permanent collection galleries, the group includes paintings by Grafton Tyler Brown (1841–1918), Claude Clark Sr. (1915–2001), Laura Wheeler Waring (1887–1948), and Walter Williams (1920–1998), and sculptural works by Willie Cole (b. 1955), Melvin Edwards (b. 1937), Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller (1877–1968), Jefferson Pinder (b. 1970), and Therman Statom (b. 1953).

Established in 2001, the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora at the University of Maryland, College Park, preserves the rich heritage of African American visual art and culture.
