Abstraction: New Acquisitions at the Mead

Exhibition Website

Sep 13 2018 - Feb 17 2019

This exhibition celebrates the recent growth of the Mead’s collection of abstract art. Many of the works presented here are on view for the first time and they represent just a small fraction of the nearly 700 artworks that the Mead has acquired since 2014. These works have their own stories of how they came to the Mead and reflect the generous donations that have expanded the museum’s permanent collection.

Richard and Brooke Kamin Rapaport, Class of 1984 (P ’16), donated works by Caio Fonseca and Leon Polk Smith. Four additional works by Polk Smith came through the generosity of the Leon Polk Smith Foundation. Amherst College students selected Analia Saban’s print as part of the Trinkett Clark Memorial Student Acquisition Program. We are proud to welcome all of the works in this gallery to the Mead so they may be studied and enjoyed for many years to come.
