Exhibition Website

Aug 17 2018 - Dec 9 2018

How do women contribute to economic and social production? What are the roles of women in a household, including but not limited to those such as wife and mother?

How does education affect women’s development and shape their identities? What are the reveries, aspirations, and ambitions of women?

How do female characters inspire a wide array of artistic production, from literature to theater and the visual arts? What opportunities and obstacles do women artists face?

This selection of historical and contemporary works of art from the Smith College Museum of Art’s collection probes into the multifaceted and ever-changing definition of womanhood in an East Asian context.
