“Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other.” -- Paulo Freire, The Pedagogy of the Oppressed

In conjunction with the 2018 Graduate Symposium, Pedagogy: Engage, Critique, Inspire, PNCA is excited to announce the opening of Potentialization «» Actualization, an exhibition exploring ideas surrounding pedagogy, education, and both the creation and transfer of knowledge.

Potentialization: the act of creating or realizing potential out of something. Actualization: the realization and cultivation of knowledges/ways of knowing.

How can artistic production rethink the role of the viewer/spectator/participant within an art institution? Perhaps it provokes discussion. What the piece actually is, is only a part of what it can potentially invite via discussion. In its actual form, can it pose potentiality? In its potential, can its core themes be actualized? This is the discussion - art that is more than its sum parts, art that extends itself beyond the space.

Potentialization «» Actualization exhibits art that goes beyond its mere visual aesthetics. This exhibition highlights artists from PNCA’s extensive pool of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and surrounding artistic communities working in a variety of media stemming from the visual arts, design, and critical study. Bringing to light shared experiences and educative topics that explore the political and socio-ecological landscape of collective and individual realities. Rather than performing solely as art objects, their work deconstructs process and exposes research. Their work is research.

This exhibition includes the artists: Jennifer Bacon, Joey Rose Cardoso, Alexis Erickson, Helen Hunter, Sara Huston, Garrick Imatani, Diego Morales, Mo Murshed, Devyn Park, Stephanie Syjuco, Rhonda Tuholski, Justin James Voiss, and has been curated by the participants of the PNCA course, Thinking Through Exhibitions: Hannah Bakken, Shelby Baldridge, Kelly Brand, Michael Perry Chandler, Caitlyn Clester, Adrienne Grimes, Justin Lizik, Qamuuqin Maxwell, Mack McFarland, Isabel Salas, Eli West.

“(Education) becomes the site of a coming together of the odd and unexpected – shared curiosities, shared subjectivities, shared sufferings, and shared passions congregate around the promise of a subject, an insight, a creative possibility.” -- Irit Rogoff, Turning
