Accidental, Elemental, Abstraction: Minna Citron

Minna Citron is a curious, potent figure in American art. Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1896, like many aspiring artists of the period, she was drawn to the Art Students League in New York City in 1928. She and fellow students Reginald Marsh and Isabel Bishop began investigating the city’s social issues, eventually becoming a part of the 14th Street School, a larger group of Social Realist artists. Citron transitioned into abstraction with the arrival of Stanley William Hayter and Atelier 17 in New York in 1940, a move that better suited her inquisitive creativity. She continually experimented with media and different forms of expression for the rest of her sixty-three year career as an artist.
