Sumi Ink Club is a participatory drawing project founded in 2005 by Los Angeles-based artists Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck. Employing the traditional brush and black ink of Sumi ink painting, the club produces work in open-to-the-public meetings in which people of all ages and skill are invited to contribute to a collaborative drawing. Using group drawing as a means to generate social interactions and sustain community connections, it is the artists’ hope that each drawing reflects the diversity of participants as well as the conversations and exchanges that occurred during its making. The mural on view at the Addison is the result of three open drawing sessions led by the artists and executed by more than 500 visitors from Andover, Lawrence, and the greater Boston area.
