In anticipation of the opening of the Museum’s John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden, now slated for fall of 2018, the MMFA features an installation of works on paper created by artists who are also known as sculptors. Many artists work in multiple media, and there is a strong connection between the three-dimensional character of sculpture and the creation of sculptural-type compositions in two dimensions found in modern and contemporary art.
Artists such as Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973) and Ke Francis (American, born 1945) are known for work in many different media and printmaking reflects the larger character of their entire oeuvre. Others such as Donald Judd (American, 1928–1994) and Alexander Archipenko (American, born Ukraine, 1887–1964) were primarily sculptors who translated their sculptural insights onto the printed page.
