Phil La Borie | Apparent Realities

Exhibition Website

Mar 6 2018 - Apr 22 2018

Garden City writer and illustrator Phil La Borie first became interested in apparent realities years ago when he first learned of an 18th-century argument between Bishop George Berkeley and Scottish philosopher David Hume. Berkeley held that reality was something that existed only in our minds, while Hume argued that all human knowledge is based on experience.

Regardless of what side of the argument one agrees with, La Borie recognizes that there are interesting and humorous opportunities for artistic expression to illustrate this and like controversies. After 50 years of art-making, La Borie continually returns to this fundamental argument about the nature of reality and how that translates into art.

This exhibition consists of hand-drawn illustrations of apparent contradictions and confusing phenomena that will make you think and, hopefully, laugh!
