First Look: Curating Drawings From the Hartford-Tandstad Collection

Exhibition Website

Jan 30 2018 - Apr 14 2018

200 works of art, including drawings, paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts, primarily dating from the late Renaissance through the 19th century. A selection of works is housed in three permanent galleries of the museum, focused on themes of Global Encounters, Approaching Nature, and Dialogues with Power. Since works on paper are sensitive to light and are not on permanent display, this exhibition provides an opportunity to showcase and celebrate a selection of 18th- and 19th-century drawings from this extraordinary collection. Rather than taking a traditional approach to interpretation of these objects, curator Eleanor Moseman is also using the opportunity to highlight the curatorial and art historical research process, posing questions about the drawings in order to make the scholarly process more transparent, addressing both technical and intellectual issues such as attribution, context, and meaning.
