Exhibition Website

Jun 8 2018 - Oct 6 2018

This exhibition presents a wide array of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures by one of Maine’s best-known artists, Dahlov Ipcar (1917-2017). Drawn mainly from private collections, the works represent periods spanning the artist’s entire career. any of the works in A Life in the Arts are exhibited publicly for the first time. Ipcar, the daughter of prominent modernist artists, Marguerite and William Zorach, reached a wide audience through the many children’s books she wrote and illustrated. She also maintained a steady studio practice, producing paintings, sculptures, and prints that have been widely collected in public and private collections. In 1939, Ipcar was the first woman–and, at the age of 21, the youngest artist to date–to be featured in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
