John Moore: Resonance

Exhibition Website

Mar 3 2018 - Jun 17 2018

Elements that comprise the paintings in the exhibition Distant Voices are derived from direct observation, or on-site notations, drawings, photographs, and other source materials. The paintings with few exceptions are composites rather than accurate depictions of actual places.

The places that inspire the works and have the most resonance for the artist are marked by the “weathered weight” of time and range from mill towns and manufacturing sites in eastern Pennsylvania to urbanized locations from Bangor to Belfast in midcoast Maine. The works are studio constructions that represent what poet Wallace Stevens refers to as “the incessant conjunction between things as they are and things imagined.”

While the work may describe worlds, everything in them is real, or could have been real, or might be real. That’s the only rule: it could be real.
