Game Time: The Sports Photography of Walter Iooss

Exhibition Website

Dec 7 2017 - Jun 24 2018

From baselines and sidelines, courtsides and ringsides, Walter looss has captured the angles and action of sports for over sixty years. During that time he has documented some of the biggest sporting events and most accomplished athletes of all time. Filled with speed and power, poise and balance, outstretched limbs and dialed-in game faces, his photographs testify to the physical and expressive capabilities of the athletic body and the unique role of photography to illuminate the drama and poetry of sports.

Looking at Iooss’ work, we reflect on great teams and fierce rivalries, childhood dreams and aging heroes, but we are also made to think about how the impact of sports far exceeds the field of play. Iooss’ photographs highlight the changing role of athletes over the last half- century to influence, challenge, and recast cultural attitudes and values regarding race, gender, sexuality, and celebrity. Sports and society converge in his photos and this exhibition will explore and unpack that convergence.

Throughout his career, Iooss has memorialized players and moments and shaped our vision of what sports looks and feels like. In turn, he has enriched our understanding of what the games we love to watch and play mean to us.
