The juried exhibition has its roots in the original All-City Outdoor Arts Festivals, which were held at Barnsdall Park starting in 1953 and founded by Kenneth Ross, the visionary director of the Municipal Art Department. The All-City Outdoor Arts Festival included a rich, interdisciplinary mix of community-focused activity, craft demonstrations, music and dance performances, as well as a curated exhibition of artwork selected by a three-person jury. In 1978, gallery director Josine Ianco-Starrels re-imagined the juried show as a standalone exhibition, transforming it into an opportunity, “to select and present works by emerging professionals who had not yet attained visibility.”
The 2018 edition of the juried exhibition will build on the legacy of this pioneering exhibition, which has provided a platform for emerging artists in Southern California for over six decades.
