In 2016, the Experimental Printmaking Institute [EPI] at Lafayette College celebrated its twentieth year as a leading center for innovative experiments in printmaking. The Institute’s founder and emeritus director, Curlee Raven Holton, commemorated this milestone with a gift of more than fifty prints to the University of Delaware. Problem Solving: Highlights from the Experimental Printmaking Institute puts selections from this gift in conversation with significant works from the University’s extensive permanent collection of African-American art. By exhibiting these works alongside important works from the University’s permanent collection, the problem solving inherent to artistic experimentation emerges as a primary concern for artists working in a wide variety of print media and techniques.
