Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the beauty and the power of Niagara Falls came to symbolize the country’s distinct natural heritage. Many artists made pilgrimages to the site in an attempt to capture its awe-inspiring majesty. Their images circulated throughout the United States and Europe, inspiring others to copy them or create their own visualizations.
