Manet to Maya Lin

A walk through Manet to Maya Lin is a journey through time and across continents. This exhibition assembles an array of work by regional, national, and international artists collected by the Nevada Museum of Art over the course of nearly ninety years. The history of the collection reflects the history of the city of Reno, from Fuller’s Crossing in the 1860s to the Biggest Little City and the home to gambling casinos in the 20th century. In the 21st century, Reno is slated to become a mecca for Silicon Valley tech companies and this influence will surely find its way into the art collections as well. Manet to Maya Lin shows a sampling of the range and character of the Nevada Museum of Art’s holdings, augmented by select loans from private collections.

Most every art museum has a goal of creating and maintaining a strong permanent collection, providing institutional identity and continuity for museum visitors. Visitors develop rapport with personal favorites from the works on display, delight in them during return visits, and regard such pieces as the signature of the museum.
