Avanguardia, an exhibition by Savannah-based artist Lisa D. Watson (American, b. 1967), explores the encroachment of the constructed environment on the natural landscape. Watson uses 95 percent reclaimed materials in her artmaking to keep her ecological footprint small. Her environmentally-conscious practice amplifies the exhibition’s primary concerns: that modern conveniences demanded by a growing human population can destroy indigenous wildlife and ecological habitats, and that humanity should strive to strike a balance between the vigor of a burgeoning city and the energy of its natural surroundings. Avanguardia is part of Telfair Museums’ #art912 initiative, a dedicated platform to showcase the work of Savannah artists.
