Diego Y Frida: A Smile in the Middle of the Way

Exhibition Website

May 13 2017 - Aug 4 2017

From the Frida Kahlo-Diego Rivera universe, this exhibition of selected photos registers a patina of long amorous encounters that are the ultimate substance of Frida and Diegos’ tumultuous relationship.

Their thunderous passion and remarkable presence are displayed in a multifaceted parsimony: all the lives contained in the lives of Frida and Diego would seem much more vivid than a photographic series in rigorous black and white. But like every display, this is also a diary: a journal of feelings, historical moods, artistic lovers, and political moods. These photographs capture the flow of their world, which was only possible due to the tenacious decision to group those moments and save them from dispersion and forgetfulness to become a visual matter that instigates curiosity and fascination.

Whether or not you go, Frida & Diego: Art, Love, Life captures the nontraditional, controversial, rebellious, and politically volatile world of Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Remembered for their provocative paintings as well as for their deep love for each other, their marriage was one of the most tumultuous and infamous in history—filled with passion, pain, betrayal, revolution, and, above all, art that helped define the twentieth century.

Catherine Reef's inspiring and insightful dual biography features numerous archival photos and full-color reproductions of both artists' work.
