Posed: Portrait Photography from the Permanent Collection

Exhibition Website

Jun 30 2017 - Oct 29 2017

This next exhibition in The Ringling’s continuing series of photography shows highlights portraits from our permanent collection. Featured are works by many preeminent 20th century artists such as Richard Avedon, Cindy Sherman, Diane Arbus, Edward Weston, and Andy Warhol. The Warhol images include Polaroids from his entourage and inner circle during the 1960s and 70s.

Several recent acquisitions will also be on view. A collection of works by Mike Disfarmer chronical a generation of people in the small town of Heber Springs, Arkansas during the early to mid-1900s. His idiosyncratic approach presents a startling intimacy not often captured in studio photography. Also highlighted are images from “The Artists” section of August Sander’s “People of the 20th Century” series. Sander documented a cross-section of life during the Weimer Republic that challenged the ascending fascist regime.

Several luminary artists and writers are seen through the eyes of photographers including Louis Armstrong, Truman Capote and Diego Rivera.
