Catie Miller: Root

Using the ceramic surface as a platform for layered narratives, Catie Miller interprets themes of community, the individual, and resoluteness. Portraits and animals are camouflaged within plant motifs. The intertwined relationships with the environment and the characters allow the viewer to examine themes rooted in good intentions while others are rooted in evil. Within the exhibition an ominous, wandering snake appears throughout the garden of illustrations in contrast to unpretentious rabbits. The rabbits carry with them a belief in luck and a false pursuit of prosperous fortune. During a highly political climate she finds stability in putting down roots within our community. Miller explores the use of color and symbolism deliberately to aid in her story telling. Some pieces offer glimpses of darkened monochrome surfaces which are a departure for her, countered by her more vibrant, colorful pieces, suggesting moments of optimism.
