Walker Art Center

Minneapolis, MN

Appropriation, narrative, repetition, reenactment—these are just a few of the strategies Mario García Torres (Mexico, b. 1975) employs to delve into the often-blurred division between truth and fiction. The artist works in a variety of mediums, including video, installation, photography, and sculpture, to explore the subjectivity of historical records and the limitations of memory.

Illusion Brought Me Here is the first US survey to focus on the artist’s practice. Encompassing the galleries and Bentson Mediatheque, the exhibition features a selection of 35 works created over the past two decades as well as two site-specific installations conceived exclusively for the Walker. A newly commissioned piece made from the soundtracks of all García Torres’s media-based art serves as a dynamic audio framework in the galleries. In addition, three monologues conceived by the artist will be presented live during the run of the show. These performances personify his intimate interpretations around contemporary issues.
