In 2015, Chicago-based collectors Helen and Russell Novak made the single largest and most important gift of art to the KMA’s contemporary print collection in the museum’s history—38 works by noted contemporary artists from around the world. Some are leading printmakers such as Enrique Chagoya, Red Grooms, and Sol LeWitt while others such as Christo, Helen Frankenthaler, and Hans Schabus are known for their work in other media, but who became interested in collaborating with master printers in order to realize their ideas in print-based formats. The selection emphasizes a broad range of printmaking techniques and formats.
