BONFIRE is a collection of 18 artworks which express Barbara’s growing concern for the Earth, a concern which started burning in 1971 when she started her first body of work, SEARCH FOR IDENTITY—THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, making ritualistic fiber sculptures for dances that celebrated nature. The last sculptures Barbara made in 1985 were Hair Hats, so named because they were made with horse and goat hair, a way to punish those who did not honor and take care of nature. The new hats made since 2015 document specific environmental disasters. Barbara will continue to document environmental incidents of her time, never running out of subject matter.
