Jean Shin: MAiZE

Artist Jean Shin invites the community to “harvest” green plastic soda bottles and repurpose them into a monumental art installation at the Figge Art Museum. Workshops beginning in January 2017 will instruct community volunteers and school groups how to create the “corn stalks.” The “corn stalk” sculptures will form an elaborate maze for the public to explore beginning June 24. 

MAiZE invites the community into the creative art-making process. Made out of thousands of plastic bottles collected and transformed by community volunteers, the corn maze construction will create a hybrid of natural and industrialized forms that raises questions about our relationship to the environment. The installation will encourage the public to think about the over-consumption of plastics and corn products and the way in which they alter our bodies and the landscape.
