Brookgreen Gardens

Murrells Inlet, SC

Brookgreen Gardens’ two indoor holiday exhibits are included in garden admission. "Holiday Memories of Yesteryear: Nostalgia, Beauty, and Fun," builds upon its previous show-stopping displays of electric model trains (both Lionel and American Flyer), period Christmas trees, and other nostalgia from holiday celebrations dating from the Gilded Age to the Mid-1980s. Along with the Lionel train layout, there is a full amusement park in miniature including The Big Dipper, an above-the-track-style wooden roller coaster, and "The Scorpion", an inverted roller coaster (patterned after “Montu” at Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL). All of the train landscapes and settings were designed and fabricated by Brookgreen Gardens’ curatorial and exhibits staff.
The Horticulture Department uses natural materials and plants to create another holiday exhibit entitled, "A Forest Sanctuary." The exhibit continues outside the window of the gallery to create the illusion of bringing the outdoors indoors. Visitors are surrounded with plants from Brookgreen and see first-hand how the beauty of nature can be found in the smallest details.
