Mar 10 2017 - Sep 4 2017

Trees have long served as treasured images throughout Chinese art, history, and culture. In the Realm of Trees recognizes this tradition through the presentation of photographs, paintings, and decorative works that possess a strong Chinese heritage and are unified by their portrayal and celebration of the natural world.

Showcased in the exhibition is Sacred Tree on Mount Lu, a set of contemporary photographs by Beijing-based American photographer, Michael Cherney, which are displayed mounted on a folding screen. This work was acquired for the Museum's permanent collection in 2016 and will be on view for the first time. Also on view are ink monochrome paintings on hanging scrolls and scholar's objects that depict trees as revered subjects.

In the Realm of Trees is the first exhibition to display Cherney's photographs juxtaposed against and visually engaged with a selected group of paintings and objects by significant Chinese artists, making this an exhibition that pushes beyond the conventional definitions and boundaries of East Asian art.
