Sep 16 2017 - Jan 9 2018

The Making of the Modern: Indigenismos will explore the influence of indigenous cultures in the development of Modernism from the 19th century to the present, concentrating on Mexico, Peru and the United States. While the history of Modernism has traditionally been associated with the avant-garde march toward abstraction, The Making of the Modern proposes an alternative interpretation, stressing the vital role of indigenous imagery as a potent source of inspiration.

Among the artists included in this groundbreaking exhibition, featuring an array of international loans, will be Emanuel Leutze, Francisco de los Rios, Frida Kahlo, Alfredo Ramos Martínez, José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Joaquín Torres-Garcia, Luis Jiménez, Sam Durant, Ana Mendiete, and James Luna.
