The SMoCA Young@Art Gallery: For Mrs. Radio

Exhibition Website

Jan 28 2017 - Apr 16 2017

Paintings, sculpture and installations by young elementary school children from Scottsdale transform the Young@Art Gallery into a contemporary exhibition by and for children. Small benches, low-hanging art and labels, and colorful, creative artwork will let children feel right at home in this gallery adorned with artwork by their peers.

This exhibition honors the memory of Scottsdale art teacher Allison Vredevoogd, who was lovingly called “Mrs. Radio” by her students. Vredevoogd, a much-loved and respected art teacher at Pima Elementary School, engaged students with her energy, enthusiasm and creativity. In spring 2016, Scottsdale Arts’ education and outreach department asked her to collaborate on an exhibition of student work. Tragically, Vredevoogd passed away a short time later. Art teachers from several Scottsdale schools, including Pima Elementary, expressed their desire to honor Vredevoogd by seeing the exhibition to fruition. For Mrs. Radio is a celebration of Vredevoogd’s passion for children and art.
